We had a fantastic turn-out for last week's glass pebble magnet party and everyone was busy cutting, gluing, and pasting. Check out some of the wonderful magnets that people made!

Glass Pebble Magnets

Join us in making personalized magnets and paperweights out of scrap paper and fabric. These will look adorable on your refrigerator or as a gift, and you can rest assured that no one else in the world has magnets like it! All materials will be provided. Craft is for everyone ages 5 and up. Instruction will be in English and Mandarin.

Kusudamas!

This past saturday, we had a blast at the kusudama making program and I must say everyone did a fantastic job! Here are a few completed kusudamas that I saw on the tables.

Chrysanthemum Kusudama

Come in and learn how to make a chrysanthemum kusudama out of just six sheets of paper. Literally translated as "medicine ball," Kusudamas are paper spheres that are made by sewing or gluing folded pieces of paper together. All materials will be provided. Everyone is invited to attend. Instructions will only be in English.

《早餐午餐晚餐》:作者新書座談會

請來參加本地獲獎詩人和作家Nellie Wong的新書座談會,她將為讀者介紹她的第四本詩《早餐午餐晚餐》。她充滿活力的詩作見證了她令人難以置信的經歷—從她父母移民經天使島來美,到第二次世界大戰,民權運動,乃至各地為團結而奮鬥等等。

Nellie Wong的詩作石刻在舊金山的Market街和Embarcadero大道上。最近,她的母校東灣奧克蘭高中的一幢新樓也以她的名字命名。

此座談會附作者新書簽售。此活動將以英語進行。

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

 Please join award-winning local poet and author Nellie Wong as she reads from Breakfast Lunch Dinner, her fourth book of poetry. Her vibrant poetry bears witness to the incredible times through which she lived—from the immigration of her parents via Angel Island, World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, and the struggle for solidarity everywhere.

Nellie Wong’s poetry in stone engravings graces upper Market Street and the Embarcadero Roadway in San Francisco. Recently, a new building on the campus of Oakland High School, her alma mater, was named after her.



Books will be available for purchase and signing. This author event will be in English only.

Bird Brained Origami

Birds of a feather flock together at the library! Join us at Chinatown and learn how to fold a paper crane and other feathered creatures. We'll attempt to fold Senbazuru--a thousand origami cranes. According to Japanese legend, folding a thousand paper cranes will grant good luck and health. A worthy goal, let's see if we can do it! Instructions will be in English. All materials will be provided. Program is open to everyone.

The Shojo in Shojo Manga


Viz Media editor Amy Yu will discuss different types of female characters that appear in shojo manga (Japanese comics for girls). Cultural context and ideas of femininity will be explored, as well as what components make the stories in shojo manga so addicting! From what makes a shojo heroine worth rooting for to what makes a successful shojo series, this editor will give her perspective on the fun medium. Whether you're unfamiliar with shojo manga or a diehard fan, there will be something for everyone if you’re interested in Japanese culture, comics, and romance.

Program will be on Saturday, September 15, from 2-3pm. For all ages. Program will only be in English.



eBook Workshop in Cantonese


Do you have an eReader? Did you know that you can check out electronic editions of library books for free? Learn how to enjoy San Francisco Public Library’s collection of ebooks on August 30 (Thu) 2:30-3:30 pm. Bring your laptop,  Kindle, Nook, iPad or other eReader device with you and we'll show you how to use it to download ebooks from the Library website.  This workshop will be conducted in Cantonese, supplemented by English.

Library Resources Workshop






Come in and learn how to use the library catalog, request and renew library materials, download ebooks and use Mango Languages to learn English on Thursday, August 23 at 10 am . Basic computer skills would be helpful. This workshop will be conducted in Chinese. Registration is not required.

竹女人: 加州明光孤兒院的故事

人道主義傑出女性得獎者莫金銀將於7月28日下午3-4:30時蒞臨華埠圖書館, 討論她的最新著作《竹女人: 加州明光孤兒院的故事》。在1935, 兩歲的莫金銀被遺棄在位於加州Los Gatos的明光孤兒院   作者將為大家分享女孩在明光孤兒院成長的故事, 以及她們之間的愛和友誼如何帶領她們面對生命中的挑戰 此項目將以英語進行,不設翻譯。會後將有新書簽售 。

Bamboo Women: Stories from Ming Quong, a Chinese Orphanage in California

Women of Distinction for Humanitarianism winner Nona Mock Wyman will discuss her latest book Bamboo Women: Stories from Ming Quong, a Chinese Orphanage in California on Saturday, July 28 from 3:00-4:30 pm.  In 1935, at the age of two, Nona was abandoned at the Ming Quong orphanage in Los Gatos, California.  Nona will share stories of coming-of-age from the women of Ming Quong and how their bonds of love and friendship carried them through life’s challenges.  This program will be conducted in English.

Fold a Lotus Flower!

Library’s Annual Open House

Come join us for our Annual Open House Celebration on Tuesday, June 12th and Saturday, June 16th at 2:30 pm  There'll be photo displays, digital scrapbook, and video documenting the branch’s long history through the 1996 reopening after major expansion and renovations to the present. Light refreshments will be served.  On Saturday, June 16th, there will a live music performance by the San Francisco Gu-Zheng Music Society.

100 Years at the Chinatown Y

For over a century, the Chinatown Y has served the community by enriching the lives of all people in spirit, mind, and body.  Ford Lee and Allyson Wong, co-authors of the book The Chinatown Y: Honoring the Legacy, Building for the Future will take you on a nostalgic trip back in time and present the history of the Chinatown YMCA through stories and photographs on Saturday, June 2nd from 2:30 to 4:00 pm.  A book sale and signing will follow this program.   The presentation will be in English.

Internet 101 for Seniors

In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May 2012, you are invited to
join a Teen Essay Contest
Topic: "Energy Saving"
