《東西相融》─ Andrew Lam 新書發表會在4月9日(星期六), 下午2點半至4點

作者Andrew Lam 朗讀及暢談他的散文選 《東西相融》 (East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres)。部分回憶,部份冥想以及部份人類文化學,這些文章揭示了越南逃難的歷史以及東西方如何彼此磨合。從美食到自尊,作者為東西兩個半球的融合以及文化差異開拓新的視野。

講座以英語進行。會後將有新書簽售活動。

"East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres" - An author event with Andrew Lam on Saturday, April 9, 2:30-4pm

Andrew Lam will talk about and read from his essay collection East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres. Part memoir, part meditation and part cultural anthropology, these essays explore the Vietnamese Diaspora and how East and West are changing each other. From cuisine to self-esteem, Lam shines new light on the bridges and crossroads where two hemispheres meld into one worldwide "immigrant nation" and the cultural gaps that remain.

This program will be in English only. Book signing follows the program.

您是初學者,想要學編織?或是經驗豐富的編織者,想與別人交流技術和經驗?請參加華埠圖書館編織圖書館活動。

13歲以上。英語和國語講解限20人,請聯絡華埠圖書分館報名。將為初學者準備少數紗線和織針,但請盡可能自備用品。

下兩個月上課日期:
5月3日及6月7日(星期二), 下午3點半至5點

Knitting at the Library on Tuesday, April 5, 3:30-5pm

Are you a beginner who wants to learn how to knit or an experienced knitter looking to share ideas and techniques with other knitters? Join the Chinatown Knitting Group, exchange ideas and learn new skills!

Ages 13 and older. Instruction will be in English and Mandarin. Attendance limited to 20 people. Please contact Chinatown Branch to sign up. There will be a small stash of yarn and needles for beginners but please bring your own supplies.

And if you can't make it this month, here are the dates for the upcoming months:

Recycled Paper Beads

Fridays, March 25th & April 1st, 3:30 - 5:30 pm

Roll up long paper strips to make rhomboid paper beads. Then you could string the beads to make a bracelet or necklace. Materials provided. For teens & tweens, ages 8 to 18 years old.

灣區作家苗麗娟 (Li Miao Lovett) 將談論和閱讀她的小說 《聽天由命》 (In the Lap of the Gods)。由於三峽大壩的興建,一個變成拾荒者的村民在自己的家園淹没在水底下的同時,拾得一名棄嬰。《聽天由命》 通過三峽大壩以人民作為代價的故事,揭示了近代中國社會黑暗的一面 - 一齣當代的悲歌,揭示了歷史被以進步為名義所抹殺。

講座以英語進行; 英/國語問答。會後將有新書簽售活動。

In the Lap of the Gods - A book talk by author Li Miao Lovett on Saturday, March 19, 2:30-4pm

Bay Area author Li Miao Lovett will talk about and read from her novel In the Lap of the Gods. As the massive Three Gorges Dam rises, a villager reduced to scavenging saves an abandoned baby girl as his world disappears beneath the waters. In the Lap of the Gods reveals the dark side of modern China through the human costs of the Three Gorges Dam – a contemporary story in which the past is erased in the name of progress.

This program will be in English with a question period in English and Chinese. A book sale and signing will follow the program.
