Free Day at The Contemporary Jewish Museum on Sunday, December 12

Once again this year SFPL library card holders and guests can get free admission to The Contemporary Jewish Museum. Take this opportunity to view the museum's Curious George Saves the Day exhibit and enjoy musical entertainment, storytimes with SFPL librarians and a bookmbile visit!

Rules:
* Beginning Saturday, 12/18/2010, visit Chinatown Branch and pick up a reading log
* Fill out one reading log for every five hous that you read
* Returm the logs to Chinatown Branch by Saturday, 1/8/2011
* For every five hours you read your name will be automatically entered into a raffle for a bamboo computer flash drive (1 gigabyte). The more you read, the more chances you have to win.

A special Thanksgiving holiday grace period is in effect and checked out library materials will not be due on November 24, 25 & 26 when the library is closed.

"Quiet As They Come" - A Book Talk by Author Angie Chau, Saturday, November 13, 2:30pm

Join us for a book talk with author Angie Chau. She will talk about and read from her short story collection Quiet As They Come which chronicles the lives of an extended Vietnamese boat family newly arrived in California. Set in San Francisco from the 1980s to the present day, it is a beautiful and at time brutal portrait of a people caught between two cultures.


This program will be in English only. Book signing follows the program.

Clipper卡(路路通卡)英文及廣東話講解在10月26日(星期二), 下午三點

舊金山公交局的代表會來到圖書館講解新的路路通卡(Clipper)的運作。路路通卡集多種功能於一身, 可以當做月票使用, 也可以增值買票以及轉車。

填寫申請表可獲免費路路通卡一張 請帶同以下任何一種身份證明文件前來申請: 出生證, 州府發出的身份證, 綠卡, 墨西哥身份證, 護照或舊金山市府發出的身份證。

英文及廣東話講解。

Clipper Card Presentation on Tuesday, October 26, 3pm in English and Cantonese

A speaker from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will talk about the new Clipper (formerly Translink) card, an all-in-one reloadable transit card that manages your passes, fares and transfers and is accepted throughout the Bay Area.

Fill out an application to receive a free card. Please bring any of the following forms of identification: birth certificate, state-issued ID card, alien registration / permanent resident card, matricula consular/consular ID, Passport, or SF City ID.

The presentation will be in Cantonese and English.

粵語災難應變講座, 10月16日(星期六), 下午2點半至4點

灣區紅十字會的人員會討論災難, 尤其地震的應變。

Disaster Preparedness Workshop in Cantonese, Saturday, October 16, 2:30-4pm

A speaker from the American Red Cross, Bay Area Chapter, will talk about disaster preparedness in this free Cantonese-language workshop.

Learn everything about earthquake preparedness, and what to do during and after an earthquake. Learn to make a disaster plan, build a kit and be informed.

Alzheimer's Association presents Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters, Thursday, October 14, 3-4pm (English) and 4-5pm (Cantonese)

If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, it's time to learn the facts. Early detection of Alzheimer's disease gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future.

This interactive workshop features video clips of people with Alzheimer's disease.

The presentation from 3-4pm will be in English only; the presentation from 4-5pm will be in Cantonese only.

Are you a beginner who wants to learn how to knit or an experienced knitter looking to share ideas and techniques with other knitters? Join Chinatown Branch's "Knitting at the Library."

Ages 13 and older. Instruction will be in English and Mandarin. Attendance limited to 20 people. Please contact Chinatown Branch to sign up. There will be a small stash of yarn and needles for beginners but please bring your own supplies.

This program will take place in the Children's Storytime Room due to a film program in the Community Meeting Room that day. Please ask for directions at the Circulation or Reference Desks.

歷史學家及作家譚碧芳(Judy Yung)會討論她的新書《天使島: 移民美國的門戶》(Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America)。汲取豐富的移民歷史和令人驚嘆的攝影,譚碧芳(Judy Yung)比較中國移民和其他族裔的移民經歷,包括日裔、韓裔、印度裔、俄裔和猶太裔的。天使島迷人的歷史為解瞭美國移民的複雜關係提供了新的視野-一個今天仍在上演的故事。

Author book talk "Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America" on Saturday, October 2, 2:30-4pm

Historian and author Judy Young will talk about her latest book Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America. Drawing on rich immigration histories and stunning photographs, Judy Young will compare the experiences of Chinese immigrants to that of other ethnic groups detained on Angel Island, including the Japanese, Koreans, Asian Indians, Russians and Jews. This fascinating history of Angel Island offers new insight into America's complicated relationship to immigration, a story that continues today.

Judy Yung is the daughter of Chinese immigrants detained on Angel Island. She is Professor Emerita of American Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the author of Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island 1910-1940 and Unbound Feet: A Social History of Chinese Women in San Francisco.

Bilingual program, English and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin). A book sale and signing follows this event.

Marry a Gold Mountain Man - A book talk with author Wu Keping on Saturday, November 25, 2:30-4pm

Local author Wu Keping's novel Marry a Gold Mountain Man tells the story of three generations of a Taishanese family both in China and in the United States. It's the second novel in the Gold Mountain series that reflects the history of Taishan immigrants in America.

A book sale and signing follows the event. This event will be in Chinese.
